This is the feature Xiaomi led with, and it is a genuine shift in what a rear display is for.

Rear screens on phones have generally been passive — they show the time, notifications, a music widget, and let you frame selfies with the main camera. Useful, but limited. Xiaomi's new Versatile Back Screen is built instead around AI-generated mini applications.

When Lu Weibing demonstrated it on 16 September, the examples were deliberately ordinary: an egg timer, a water-drinking tracker, a Pomodoro timer, an English vocabulary trainer, and recipe suggestions. None of those is individually impressive. The point is what they have in common — they are small, single-purpose tools generated on demand, living on a screen you glance at rather than unlock into.

Xiaomi's framing is that the back screen becomes an AI interaction surface. Nothing else on the market works this way, and it is the one thing about this generation that is not a spec bump.

Worth noting: the back screen is exclusive to the Pro and Pro Max. The standard Xiaomi 18 will not have it.

The standard Xiaomi 18 is not coming until December

For the first time, Xiaomi has split the launch of its Pro and standard models. Only the 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max arrive on 23 September; the standard Xiaomi 18 has been pushed to December, with some reports suggesting early 2027.

If you were planning to wait for the standard model to save money, that is a three-month wait at minimum, and you would be giving up the back screen entirely. For most buyers looking at this series now, the practical choice is between the Pro and the Pro Max.

Xiaomi 18 Pro or 18 Pro Max?

Xiaomi has confirmed this is a dual-size strategy, with the Pro Max as the larger model. Both share the Versatile Back Screen, HyperOS 4 and, according to reports, the same Leica camera system and chipset. The differences reported so far:

Choose the 18 Pro if you want a genuinely compact flagship. A 6.36-inch screen is small by current standards, and pairing it with the full camera system and back screen is unusual — most brands reserve the best hardware for the largest body.

Choose the 18 Pro Max if battery life matters most. The reported gap is around 1,500mAh, which is substantial, and you get the larger screen with it.

• Processor: world debut of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro on TSMC's 2nm process, with a third-generation Oryon CPU above 5GHz, LPDDR6 memory and UFS 5.0 storage. Both models have cleared network certification supporting the n79 band and UWB.
• Cameras: Leica-tuned triple system with a 200MP LOFIC main sensor, a 200MP periscope telephoto said to gather nearly three times more light than the previous generation, and an ultra-wide. The module is said to sit flush with the back screen with no bump.
• Display: 6.36-inch 2K LTPO AMOLED on the Pro at up to 4000 nits, dimming to 1 nit, with an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor and uniform sub-1mm bezels.
• Charging: 100W wired, 50W wireless, plus reverse wireless.
• Other: a dedicated physical AI button.
• Storage: 12GB+256GB as the entry configuration, with 512GB and 1TB above it.

Why 2nm and LOFIC are the two to watch

Two of the reported specifications are worth understanding rather than skimming.

2nm. If the reports hold, this series is first to market with Qualcomm's 2nm flagship. Smaller process nodes mean more transistors in the same area and less power for the same work — which on a phone shows up as sustained performance rather than peak benchmark numbers. It is also the reason prices are expected to rise: 2nm wafers are considerably more expensive than 3nm.

LOFIC. Reports describe the main sensor as a 200MP LOFIC unit. LOFIC stands for Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor — a sensor structure that adds an overflow capacitor to each pixel, so bright areas that would normally blow out to pure white keep their detail. In practice it means dramatically wider dynamic range in high-contrast scenes: backlit portraits, sunsets, shooting into windows. It is the same technique appearing in other flagship camera phones this year, and it is a more meaningful upgrade than the megapixel count.

When is the Xiaomi 18 Pro series released?

Xiaomi has confirmed 23 September 2026 at 19:00 China time. Lei Jun announced the date on 20 September, after Lu Weibing confirmed on 15 September that the series would arrive this month. Pre-orders are already open in China with a deposit.

The China release comes first. Xiaomi's global rollout typically follows weeks to months later, and does not always include every model or configuration.

How much will they cost?

Xiaomi has not announced pricing. Reports place the 18 Pro between roughly ¥5,499 and ¥5,999 and the 18 Pro Max between roughly ¥6,999 and ¥7,999, which would be a meaningful increase over the previous generation.

The reasons given are consistent across sources: 2nm silicon costs substantially more than 3nm, and memory and storage prices have risen across the whole industry this year. Xiaomi is not alone in this — every flagship launching this autumn has faced the same cost pressure.
