What is a “mid-fold”?

Foldables have split into two camps. Book-style foldables like the Galaxy Z Fold open into a tall, narrow panel. The newer wide foldables open into something closer to a square. Xiaomi's argument is that neither is quite right, so the 18 Fold sits deliberately between them.

Wider open than a traditional book foldable, slightly smaller closed than the wide foldables that have appeared recently — Xiaomi's stated goal is balancing what the screen looks like against what the phone feels like in the hand. Lei Jun's framing was “compact enough to hold in one hand when closed, expansive at a glance when open.”

The 4:3 inner ratio is worth noting on its own. It is the same shape as a tablet rather than a widened phone, which suits documents, reading and split-screen work far better than a tall panel does.

There is a strategic signal here too: Xiaomi has retired the MIX Fold line entirely and moved its foldable flagship into the main numbered series. Foldables are no longer the experimental branch at Xiaomi — this is the flagship.

Two world firsts inside

The 18 Fold is the launch vehicle for two significant pieces of silicon:

XRING O3. Xiaomi's second in-house flagship SoC, built on TSMC's 3nm process with 24 billion transistors, a ten-core all-big-core CPU and a peak clock of 4.35GHz. Very few companies design their own flagship phone silicon — Apple, Samsung, Huawei and Google, and now Xiaomi. Putting it in the most expensive phone the company has ever made is a statement about how confident Xiaomi is in it.

CXMT LPDDR6. The 18 Fold is the first phone anywhere to ship with LPDDR6 memory from CXMT, a Chinese memory manufacturer. LPDDR6 is the next generation of mobile memory, offering higher bandwidth and better efficiency than the LPDDR5X used across current flagships.

How much will the Xiaomi 18 Fold cost?

Xiaomi has not published a price, but it has been unusually direct about the direction. Company sources have indicated pricing above ¥10,000, and President Lu Weibing said at IFA that it is “well over ten thousand” while arguing it represents strong value against Apple — and pointing at rising memory costs as a factor. Reports place it around the ¥12,000 tier.

If that holds, this is the first Xiaomi phone to cross ¥10,000, which is a meaningful moment for a company built on aggressive pricing. The justification is the hardware: its own flagship silicon, first-in-the-world memory and a new folding mechanism, all in one device.
