What changed: the screen now folds away

This is the reason to look at the second generation rather than the first.

The original Mate XT folded Z-style: one panel folded outward and one inward. That is what let a 10-inch screen collapse into a pocketable phone, but it meant a section of the flexible display sat on the outside when the phone was closed — exposed to keys, coins and drops. It was the single most common hesitation people had about buying one.

The Mate XT 2 folds G-style. Both wings fold inward, one at a time, so when the phone is shut the flexible screen is entirely wrapped inside the body. What you touch day to day is a separate 6.5-inch cover screen behind Basalt Kunlun Glass, and the delicate panel only comes out when you actually want the big canvas.

The numbers around it: folded it measures 157.2 × 77 × 12.3mm; unfolded it is 157.2 × 219.2mm and between 3.5 and 4.0mm thick. It weighs about 299g.

The displays

Two screens, both LTPO OLED running 1–120Hz adaptive refresh with 1440Hz high-frequency PWM dimming:

Both cover 1.07 billion colours and the P3 gamut. The privacy display option builds a privacy layer into the main screen itself rather than using a stick-on filter — on a 10.2-inch panel you might open on a plane or in a meeting, that is more useful than it sounds, and it does not affect how the screen looks head-on.

The camera: a real variable aperture

The main sensor is the interesting part. It is a 50MP 1/1.28-inch RYYB sensor with a continuously variable F1.49–F4.0 aperture — a physical iris that opens and closes across ten steps, the way a camera lens does, rather than a fixed opening with software blur. Open it up in low light, stop it down for depth of field.

There are 8MP cameras on both the cover and main screens, and because the phone folds, you can also shoot selfies on the rear cameras using the cover screen as a viewfinder.

Satellite communication

Worth calling out separately: the Mate XT 2 supports Tiantong satellite calling, satellite paging and two-way Beidou satellite messaging. That is voice calls and messages with no terrestrial network at all — genuinely useful if you spend time away from coverage. HarmonyOS 7 and how apps work

This is the part to understand before ordering. The Mate XT 2 runs HarmonyOS 7.0, Huawei's own operating system. It is not Android, and it does not include Google Mobile Services or the Google Play Store.

Apps come from Huawei AppGallery instead, which carries a large and growing catalogue, and Huawei supplies its own equivalents for the essentials — Petal Maps for navigation, Huawei Browser, Huawei Cloud, and so on. Anything that runs in a browser works normally. The system, menus and keyboard support English. HarmonyOS is also where the multi-screen behaviour on a tri-fold comes from — split-screen with the AI assistant, split-screen translation, split-screen navigation, document comparison and large-screen annotation are all built into the system for this form factor.

So the question is simply what you use daily. If you live in AppGallery, web apps and Huawei's own services, this is hardware nobody else makes. If several Google apps are central to your routine, that is worth weighing up first.
