Honor did something unusual with this announcement. Rather than a full teaser campaign, CEO Li Jian confirmed the Magic9 series from the stage at the Honor Robot Phone launch on 12 August, opened reservations immediately, and showed exactly one thing: the rear camera.

That is a deliberate signal. The Robot Phone was Honor's first device with ARRI Image Science — the German cinema camera manufacturer whose bodies shoot a large share of feature films. The Magic9 appears to be where that partnership moves from a specialist halo product into Honor's mainstream annual flagship.

Why the ARRI partnership matters

Most phone camera partnerships are about colour science — a brand name tuning how photos look. The ARRI collaboration on the Robot Phone went further than that, and if the reports are right the Magic9 goes further still.

What ARRI brings is LogC3, ARRI's own log recording format. Footage shot in LogC3 drops into the same colour pipeline professional productions already use, graded with official ARRI Look files, with native DaVinci Resolve compatibility. That is the difference between phone footage you have to work around and phone footage that cuts alongside proper camera material.

If the reported details hold — a lens arrangement modelled on ARRI cinema bodies, ARRI branding printed on the phone itself, and the full LogC3 and Look toolset — the Magic9 would be the most serious video phone Honor has made, and one of very few phones aimed squarely at people who actually grade their footage afterwards.

Flat screens return

The other change worth flagging is the display. Reports say Honor is dropping curved edges across the entire Magic9 series in favour of 2.5D flat panels with large rounded corners — a direct response to a preference that has been building for a few years now, since flat screens avoid edge glare, accidental palm touches and the distortion curved edges introduce.

Two sizes are expected, around 6.36 inches and 6.85 inches, which would give you a genuinely compact flagship option alongside the large one — something increasingly rare.
