Apple removed the physical SIM slot from US iPhones years ago, and the iPhone 18 Pro continues that. Apple's own specification is explicit: US models use dual eSIM only and are not compatible with physical SIM cards.
That is fine if you live in a country where every carrier you might use supports eSIM and lets you transfer it easily. It is a real problem if you travel to places where prepaid SIMs are sold from a kiosk, if your carrier charges to reissue an eSIM, or if you like keeping a spare physical SIM in a drawer.

Choose the Hong Kong version if…
You want the 25W MagSafe charging and the extra bands. 25W versus 15W is a real difference in how quickly the phone tops up on a stand, and it matches what the US and European models get. The additional n53 and band 53 support is a small bonus in a few markets. One physical SIM plus eSIM covers almost everyone's needs.

Choose the China version if…
You genuinely want two physical SIM cards at once — a work number and a personal number, or a home SIM and a local SIM while travelling, without touching eSIM at all. No other iPhone 18 Pro variant does this. The trade-off is wireless charging at 15W rather than 25W.
It is also the only version that can hold a mainland China carrier's eSIM, which matters if you spend time in China.
About eSIM and where you can activate it
This causes more confusion than anything else, so to be precise:
- Both versions can activate a local carrier's eSIM once you are outside mainland China. Apple requires location services to be on when you do it.
- Inside mainland China, a China-version iPhone cannot install an eSIM from a foreign carrier, and foreign-version iPhones cannot install a mainland Chinese carrier's eSIM. These restrictions only apply while you are physically in mainland China.
- If you are buying from outside China, this is not something you will run into — you can install travel eSIMs and local carrier eSIMs normally on either version.
