MatePad Air 12-inch price: what you actually pay

There are more options here than on most tablets, and they fall into a few groups:

A 144Hz OLED at this size is the story

Most 12-inch tablets in this bracket use an LCD panel at 60 or 120Hz. This one is OLED at up to 144Hz, which is a combination usually reserved for considerably more expensive tablets.

OLED means true blacks and per-pixel contrast, which shows up most when watching films or reading in a dark room. The 144Hz refresh is what makes scrolling and pen input feel immediate. And the 3:2 shape is the one people notice after a week — it is simply a better shape for reading and working than the widescreen ratios most tablets use.

What PaperMatte actually does

If you write or draw on a tablet, this is the version to look at. PaperMatte is Huawei's anti-glare screen treatment, and it is not a stick-on film — the glass itself is nano-etched with microscopic structures that scatter reflections instead of bouncing them straight back at you. Huawei quotes a reduction of around 97% in reflected ambient light.

Two things follow from that. Reflections largely disappear, which matters near a window or under overhead lights. And the texture gives the stylus something to bite against, so writing feels closer to pen on paper than nib on glass.

The trade-off is the usual one for matte screens: colours look very slightly less punchy than on the glossy panel. If you mostly watch films, the standard version is the better pick. If you take notes, annotate or draw, PaperMatte is worth the difference.

Battery and charging

The 10100mAh battery is large for a 5.3mm chassis, and Huawei quotes around 15.6 hours of video playback. Charging is 66W, which fills it in about 85 minutes — fast for a battery this size. It can also reverse charge accessories at 5W over the cable.

Worth putting the physical numbers together: 5.3mm thick, 509g, with a 12-inch OLED and a 10100mAh cell inside. That is a genuinely portable large tablet rather than a heavy one.

Six speakers, and the accessories

Audio is better than the class norm: six stereo speakers tuned as HUAWEI SOUND, plus two microphones. Most tablets have four.

Both accessories are supported and both are available as bundles:

Two things to be aware of: there is no fingerprint sensor (unlocking is by face or passcode), and no NFC. Neither matters much on a tablet, but worth knowing.

HarmonyOS 6.1 and how apps work

This is the part to understand before ordering. The MatePad Air runs HarmonyOS 6.1, Huawei's own operating system. It is not Android, and it does not include Google Mobile Services or the Google Play Store.

Apps come from Huawei AppGallery instead, which carries a large and growing catalogue, and Huawei supplies its own suite for the essentials — Huawei Notes, Huawei Reading, the drawing app, an education workspace, cloud storage and Petal Maps. Anything that runs in a browser works normally. The system, menus and keyboard support English.

The tablet is also where HarmonyOS is arguably strongest: note-taking, reading, annotation and split-screen work are all built into the system, and it connects natively with Huawei phones and laptops for file transfer and screen sharing. Huawei's own Notes app paired with the M-Pencil is a genuinely good combination.

So the question is what your daily software looks like. If you want a large-screen device for reading, notes, drawing, media and web work, this is excellent value for the panel you get. If a specific Android or Google app is essential to how you use a tablet, that is worth weighing up first.
