The camera system
The main camera is unchanged from the Pro Max and RS — a physical 10-stop variable aperture from F1.4 to F4.0 in front of a 50MP RYYB sensor with OIS. The difference between this phone and those is the telephoto:
- 50MP wide: F1.4–F4.0 physical variable aperture, OIS, RYYB. 24mm equivalent.
- 50MP telephoto macro: F2.1, OIS, RYYB. 4x optical zoom, 8x optical-quality and up to 100x digital. 90mm equivalent, with macro focusing capability.
- 40MP ultra-wide: F2.2, RYYB. 13mm equivalent.
- 3rd-generation Maple Color Sensor reads scene colour for accurate white balance under mixed lighting.
- Front: 13MP AF ultra-wide, F2.0, with a 3D depth camera for 3D face recognition.
- Video: 4K front and rear, 1080P slow motion to 960fps, Video HDR Vivid, Video Log and RAW.
All three rear cameras use RYYB sensors. RYYB replaces the green pixels in a standard sensor with yellow, which lets in more light per pixel and helps in low-light conditions.
What is the physical variable aperture?
The main camera has an actual iris diaphragm with 10 adjustable stops, from F1.4 to F4.0. At F1.4 the aperture is wide open, gathering maximum light and producing natural lens-based shallow depth of field. At F4.0 it narrows for a deep-focus plane on architecture and landscapes. This is a physical mechanism, not a software effect.
